Conquering the world every day can leave you feeling burnt out. It’s that time of the year where everything feels ‘too much’ because it probably is, and the gag is it’s probably going to get worse as we’re nearing the end of the year. Even if you enjoy what you do, or you’re self employed or still studying or all of the above you are not immune to burnout.

Burnout is mostly a product of stress on a daily basis. Have you ever felt like your lecturers/boss/colleagues have high expectations of you and think you have 30 hours in a day? Well, same. These expectations also lead to mental and emotional burnout. Burnout can make it difficult to do simple things, it makes everything feels like effort.

Below are seven signs you’re feeling burnt out.

1. Your to-do list feels extra overwhelming

If your to-do list is overwhelming on a daily basis, it might be a sing that you’re burning yourself out. Instead of having a longgg to do list that makes you feel tired while you’re writing it spread out your workload. Stick to the top three task you have to complete by the end of the day.

2. You’re extremely exhausted

If you’re sleeping for 8 hours a night a still wake up feeling tired, you might be turn out. Try rest during the day to regain strengthens or give yourself a day off where you don’t touch your laptop/books.

3. You’re struggling to find motivation

If it feels like you don’t have motivation to do anything (even things you love) you might be experiencing burnout. A good way to combat this is to spend time thinking about the future you envision for yourself and where you see yourself in 3-5 years.

4. You don’t have time to practice self-care

Self-care can be a good way to deal with burnout, however the tricky part is actually finding time for self-care. Note: If you don’t have time for self-care, you’re probably prioritizing everyone else’s needs above your own.

Instead, give yourself permission to rest and to practice self-care. Self-care is the ultimate remedy for burnout.

My Take

I was feeling burnout for about 2 weeks, I was reluctant to take leave and I was definitely neglecting my self-care. During the first week, I knew I was feeling more tired than usual, but I ignored it and ‘pushed through’. During the second week, every single task felt like effort. I woke up feeling tired and unmotivated. I was forced to give myself a day off because I quiet literally didn’t have the physical capacity to do anything. So, my advice is rest when you feel you’re tired. Don’t ignore the signs.

Key takeaway
Make self-care a priority and rest when you’re feeling burnout.
