When to Leave Your Romantic Relationship

Every romantic relationship is different and unique to the people in the relationship. Sometimes relationships seem tedious, or you question whether the relationship is actually going to go the distance. If you’re in a romantic relationship that you feel isn’t going anywhere it might be time for you to move on. Below are some signs that indicate its time for you to move on.

Three important signs:

1. When you live in past memories more than the present

Do you constantly cling to the ‘good times’ and replay all the great moments you and your partner shared? Do you use those ‘good times’ as a reason to stay in the relationship? That might be a sign that its time to move on. Relationships exist on the present and your decision to stay with your person should be based on your current feelings.

2. When you constantly justify their actions

When you feel the need to justify someone’s action/s, that action/s made you uncomfortable. You can’t ‘explain away’ the discomfort you’re feeling. If you are constantly justifying your partner’s actions, your relationship is based on rationalisations, not reality.

3. When your partner expects you to change

Change is part of life, we can’t escape it but love in its purest form is unconditional. Unconditional love doesn’t require you to lose weight or shave your forearms or drastically change who you are. Unless the suggested change is your wellbeing, the love is conditional.

Other signs that don’t need elaboration:

- When the relationship brings you more pain than joy.

- When your fundamental views and beliefs are inherently different.

- When you, your partner and the relationship as a whole is not growing.

- When you stay mainly because you think things will be better in the future.

- Someone else seems more appealing.
